Dolphins Stadium
When H. Wayne Huizenga first mentioned adapting
Dolphins Stadium to house an expansion baseball
team,
purists howled. Visions of Toronto's old Exhibition
Stadium haunted fans. The only way Huizenga could
convince the fans (and baseball owners) that it
could be done was to build it. And convince them he
did.
Constructed as a football-only stadium for the NFL
Dolphins in 1987, Huizenga and company spent about
$20 million to convert Dolphins Stadium to
dual-purpose in 1990. While the home of the Florida
Marlins
is no Canden Yards, it's better than purists
expected.
The 202-foot-long out-of-town scoreboard in left and
left-center field contributes to the nice baseball
feel.
Nicknamed the Blue Blocker or the Teal Tower, it's a
manually operated board that, like Wrigley Field's,
provides an inning-by-inning score of every other
major-league game.
Since acquiring full ownership of the stadium in
1994, Huizenga has instituted $15 million worth of
improvements inside and out, such as adding 7,500
parking spaces, a food and entertainment complex,
a second JumboTron, and a state-of-the-art turf
drainage system.
Defending
Champions Super Bowl XLI - 2007 NFL Champions
Indianapolis Colts
In defeating the
Chicago Bears 29-17, the Colts won their first Super
Bowl since 1970, when the franchise was based in
Baltimore.
Indianapolis
quarterback Peyton Manning was named MVP, and at
last has crowned his seven times as an All-Pro with
a Super Bowl win. Indy’s head coach, Tony Dungy, and
his Bears counterpart and close friend, Lovie Smith,
were the first African-American coaches to guide
teams to a Super Bowl, so his team’s victory made
Dungy the first black coach to win the big one.
Will Peyton Manning
and the Indianapolis Colts make it back to defend
their title? Maybe the Chargers and LaDainian
Tomlinson will finally break through, and you can
never count out Tom Brady and the Patriots. Or
perhaps the Cowboys, Saints, Panthers or Redskins
will represent the NFC this time around. No matter
who makes it to the NFL championship game.
